Maintaining the Windows Registry with System Mechanic (1 versions piégées )
"Ron Slater [iolo technologies, LLC]" ( 11-03-2005 22:57:58 )
Hello secarum,

Over time, the database that Windows and other applications use to store information (the "Registry") can begin to hold data that is no longer valid or has become obsolete. Such information can range from a reference to a file that no longer exists, to a driver that Windows is attempting to load each time you start your machine (resulting in system crashes, or worse). This invalid data also eventually begins to clutter your Registry, slowing Windows down and causing other problems.

The Registry is not normally an inviting (let alone safe) place to be spelunking unless you are a seasoned PC guru, and even then the process of locating legitimately invalid or corrupted data is be tedious at best. The Registry is also one of the most common places for "mysterious" PC problems to lurk –- you know, the kind of crashes that seem to know when you’re working on something important, and then decide to blind-side you right before you save your work!

With System Mechanic, cleansing and optimizing the Registry is a safe and easy process.

Here’s how:

1. Start System Mechanic by double-clicking its corresponding icon on your desktop, which appears as a red toolbox labeled "System Mechanic".

2. Select the "Fix Registry Problems" option located on the "Fix" tab.

3. Select the "Fix, Clean, and Optimize the Registry" option.

3. The various locations of the Registry are listed on this tool’s main tab labeled "Locations". For more information about these sections, select the button labeled "Help" from the right side of the window. When you are finished, select the "Next" button.

4. The options tab allows you to specify excluded parts of the Registry from the scan. Select the "Search" button to continue.

5. The Registry Cleaner will start scanning each section of the Registry. This process can range from about 10 seconds to several minutes, depending on the speed of your machine as well as the extent at which your Registry is cluttered. Once the process is complete, a button labeled "Remove" will appear on a toolbar above any invalid references listed. The items listed are links in the Registry to specific bits and pieces of your system, like files, drivers, fonts, etc., which no longer exist in the referenced location. Further, by removing these Registry references, you are not physically removing files from your system –- you are only removing the clutter and erroneous items from Windows’ database of information.

5. To remove a reference, select it with your mouse, then select the button labeled "Remove", and finally choose the option labled "Remove selected entries". To remove all references, select the button labeled "Remove" and then select the option labeled "Remove All Entries". As a safety measure, all actions you perform at this time are saved as undo-information which may be accessed under the tab labeled "Undo Information".
